New grant money paves way for local road projects

Local communities will receive state matching grants to improve roads and bridges, according to State Rep. Bill Friend (R-Macy).

More than $150 million was awarded to Indiana cities, towns and counties through the Community Crossings grant program, which is now in its second year. The grants are available through the Indiana Department of Transportation as a result of legislation supported by Friend in 2016.

“This grant money will go a long way in repairing and upgrading our local roadways,” Friend said. “Many Hoosiers and out-of-state visitors travel through our community every day, and it is important that we maintain our thoroughfares to ensure the safety of all motorists. And, very importantly, rural economies like ours especially depend upon reliable roads and bridges.”

Cass County will receive $369,042, Fulton County will receive $515,050, and Miami County will receive $166,575. In addition, 10 local communities were also awarded grants:

Community Grant Amount
Akron $58,068
Bunker Hill $90,000
Converse $150,000
Fulton $66,189
Galveston $60,412
Logansport $547,395
Macy $167,400
Rochester $670,000
Royal Center $188,020
Walton $61,750

Projects eligible for funding through Community Crossings include road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements, small structure replacements, guardrail replacements and signs.
