Ivy Tech offering English literature, Certified Nursing at Rochester site

ROCHESTER, Ind. — Ivy Tech Community College is offering a new course, Introduction to Literature, at its Rochester Instructional Site during spring semester 2017, which starts Jan. 17.

ENGL 206, Introduction to Literature, will be offered from 9:30 to 10:45 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This three-credit course develops basic strategies for critically reading and interpreting poetry, fiction, and drama. This is a TransferIN course, part of the State of Indiana program that mandates credit transfer between all Indiana public college and university campuses, with ENGL 111, English Composition, as a prerequisite.

Also returning to the Rochester schedule after a year’s absence is HLHS 107, the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preparation class. This course, which has no prerequisites and is only 12 weeks long, prepares students to take the state CNA examination.

With the certification earned by passing the examination, successful students are ready for employment as a CNA, working with doctors and nurses to provide patient care in a number of settings, from school districts to hospitals and nursing homes. Becoming a CNA is often the first step for people who are looking for a career in healthcare and, according to nursegroup.com, the CNA salary range in Indiana is around $19,000 to $24,000. The five-credit course will meet from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, from Feb. 13 through May 13.
